What is HOLISTIC HEALTH?

Holistic health is a "whole person" approach to health and wellness.  It includes not only physical, but also emotional, social, and spiritual health.

Throughout history peoples, civilizations and societies have grappled with how to improve health and wellness.

Religious beliefs have informed the approach for some civilizations (such as no autopsies and no surgery for those religions that forbid the opening of the body) that have led to such practices as acupuncture and acupressure of what is typically viewed as "Eastern Medicine."  While religions that allow the opening of a body have lead more often to what we view as "Western Medicine" with surgery.

Eastern medicine is becoming more accepting of western, and vice-versa:  Especially in the acceptance of pharmaceutical drugs and herbal drug approaches in each.

Western (drugs and surgery) medicine is in recent years also starting to take a more holistic approach with patients, with doctors often asking more questions about a patient's general daily life and feelings as much as the standards "symptoms."

Standard western medicine usually approaches pain and symptoms as something that needs to be eradicated with drugs and / or surgery.  The Holistic approach views pain, illness, disease (the opposite of "ease"), and such as just part of a mirror reflecting the health of a person - not necessarily the root problem.

Here it should be emphasized that the reader be balanced.  If hit by a car, go to an Emergency Room!  If you feel chest pains, forget herbs (in fact, avoid them as some may worsen the situation) and get to an E.R. right away.  But if you have a slight cold or minor (MINOR) flu symptoms (we do recommend vaccinations), a holistic approach may be better than going to the E.R. for every little ache and complaint.  To this end, what is known as "Integrative Medicine" is the ideal as integrative medicine combines the best of both worlds!

The holistic approach takes a broad view of illness, considering not only internal causes but also potential external causes.  (Being in a really bad relationship, for example, will take a toll on one's health.  Being in a really good relationship, on the other hand, will support and strengthen one's health.)

Holistic approaches explore and offer multi-dimensional "healing" versus a specific "cure."  The holistic approach asks about one's potential (and frequency) to get diseases, such as colds and infections, as much as how it was transmitted.

How can we better strengthen our Immune System to ward off illness, or mitigate symptoms when illness does occur?  What in our lives (social - including our work environment - spiritual, emotional, physical, etc.) should we either eliminate or modify to improve our daily peace and happiness?

The holistic approach concerns itself as much with prevention of illness, then, as it does with symptoms.  Psychology (emotional health and wellness) is as important to well-being as are vitamins.  Family life, one's profession (and satisfaction in that profession), religious / spiritual experiences, love we feel from and for others, all are important to the whole-person view of the holistic health approach.
